ABB and Paragon Partner to Enhance U.S. Nuclear Solutions

ABB and Paragon Partner to Enhance U.S. Nuclear Solutions

A Strategic Collaboration to Modernize U.S. Nuclear Facilities

ABB and Paragon Energy Solutions have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop advanced Instrumentation, Control, and Electrification (ICE) systems tailored for the nuclear power industry. This partnership aims to deliver a unified, single-vendor solution that enhances both the safety and performance of current nuclear plants and next-generation Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

Comprehensive Scope: Critical and Non-Critical Systems

The joint development strategy will focus on both critical and non-critical areas within nuclear facilities. ABB will bring its strengths in automation, electrification, and digitalization to non-critical systems, such as control room solutions, balance of plant (BOP) systems, and the ABB UNITROL® excitation system. Meanwhile, Paragon will focus on critical safety systems including Reactor Protection Systems (RPS), neutron monitoring, and essential electrical distribution equipment like breakers and motor control centers.

Supporting Growth in Energy-Intensive Sectors

The collaboration is designed to meet the increasing energy demands from sectors such as AI infrastructure and data centers—industries that are power-hungry and require consistent, low-carbon electricity sources. With the U.S. Department of Energy allocating $900 million in funding for SMR development, this partnership positions both companies to play a critical role in shaping the future of nuclear energy in America.

Leveraging Unique Strengths for Integrated Innovation

ABB’s contribution lies in its proven digital technologies and ability to enhance operational efficiency through asset performance management and cybersecurity systems. Paragon brings its legacy of nuclear-grade component dedication and qualification, ensuring all systems meet the strictest industry requirements. This synergy will deliver cohesive solutions to utilities that demand reliability and longevity from their infrastructure.

Shared Vision for a Low-Carbon Future

This collaboration highlights a mutual commitment to advancing sustainable energy. As Doug VanTassell, CEO of Paragon, notes, the joint approach will help modernize aging nuclear infrastructure and accelerate deployment of SMRs. Per Erik Holsten of ABB emphasized the importance of innovation and technology in supporting reliable, safe nuclear operations as part of a broader low-carbon strategy.
