1768-CNBR is a ControlNet bridge module that embeds two (2) ControlNet ports for redundant media operation. It belongs to the 1768 CompactLogix product family and supports installation to 1768-L43 and 1768-L45 controllers. The module supports communication speeds up to 5Mbps and can communicate with up to 99 ControlNet nodes. It is equipped with two (2) BNC connectors and one (1) network access port (NAP). The ControlNet communication module is usually used to automatically switch to the auxiliary trunk line when the trunk fails, thereby improving the usability of the communication highway.

The module supports data messaging, uploading and downloading to the operator interface, I/O bridging, planned data transmission generated and used by tags, and unscheduled messages.

This module is compatible to communicate with other ControlNet modules of other controller platforms, such as ControlLogix, Point I/O, Flex I/O, 1336 drives, PowerFlex drives, intelligent motor controllers, Encompass partners, PanelView operator terminals, FactoryTalk SCADA Workstations, and third-party equipment. For connected messaging support, this module supports a maximum of 64 connections, of which five (5) controllers can be configured to achieve rack optimization and only listen to the connection of the module.

ControlNet communication uses RG-6 coaxial cable as the ControlNet backbone. The redundant ControlNet network is equipped with auxiliary trunks that duplicate every connection of another ControlNet trunk. Channel A of the 1768-CNBR is connected to the backbone, while channel B is connected to the secondary trunk. Each channel must have a dedicated ControlNet breakout cable assembly, and both ends of the ControlNet trunk must be closed with a pair of 75-ohm terminal resistors.

Three (3) software tools from Allen-Bradley can be used to configure this ControlNet module. The main software is RSLogix 5000 programming software. Using RSLogix 5000, you can define CompactLogix projects and ControlNet communications, including hardware configuration. With RSNetworx, you can configure ControlNet devices using IP addresses or hostnames, and you can configure network scheduling. Using RSLinx, you can establish communication equipment, communication diagnosis, and communication between equipment. If used with 1768-L43, up to two (2) 1768-CNB can be used, and if installed with 1768-L45, four (4) 1768-CNB can be used. Adjustable hardware parameters include installation node, slot number, electronic keying, requested packet interval (RPI), module prohibition, and controller response to module failure.

The module provides a network address switch on the side of the module for configuring the ControlNet node address of the module. Each module must have a unique address to limit the configuration. Up to 99 addresses can be configured, which represents the largest ControlNet node in the network.

When connecting this module to redundant ControlNet media, the correct network must be connected to the appropriate tap. The channels of each partner in the same network segment must be connected. If the connections are interchanged, incorrect display and communication errors may occur.

The module is equipped with three (3) two-color LED indicators to visually provide diagnostic information and module operation.
